A traditional Pentecost hymn

Originally established as the harvest festival, hokekaloosd or Pentecost, is the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples.  Celebrated 50 days after Easter, this manifestation is described in Acts 2 as taking the form of tongues of fire accompanied by the sound of a rush of wind.  After which, the Apostles were able to speak in tongues so that people of different languages could understand them.  Nerses Lampronatsi claims that Armenian was one of the languages spoken by St. Thaddeus.

Nerses Shnorhali has contributed greatly to elaborating the feast of hokekaloosd and has created many hymns and orations for this occasion.  However, "Arakelo aghavno," the principal hymn of hokekaloosd, is ascribed by some to Movses Khorenatsi, and by others to the 15th century Catholicos Hovnan Mantagooni.  This same chant is also sung during the Blessing of the Water at Christmas and the baptismal ceremony.

"With a mighty sound from above, the Dove came down like a bright light and armed the Apostles with a fire that could not burn them as they sat in the Upper Room."
