The Feast of Holy Etchmiadzin

After his emergence from Khor Virab and after preaching the faith of Christ among Armenians, St. Gregory had a remarkable vision in which Jesus descended from heaven and with a golden hammer struck the place where the pagan Temple of Sandaramet was located.  On that spot the great cathedral of Etchmiadzin was built.  In fact, "Etchmiadzin" means, "the only begotten descended."

This feast day, which was established by St. Gregory himself, commemorates the founding of the Universal Church in general and the Armenian Church in particular and is always observed on the second Sunday after Pentecost.
