Archbishop's Annual Appeal Raises Support, Awareness of Successful Programs
Committed to being a good steward of its resources, and keeping spending in check, the Eastern Diocese still manages to sponsor plenty of programs to help parishes build stronger Armenian communities.
To help fund those programs and, more importantly, to educate Armenians about what the Diocese does, the Eastern Diocese initiated the Archbishop's Annual Appeal in 2002. Its goal is to ensure that all Armenians act as stewards of their faith.
"It's difficult today, but we are determined to raise awareness of our Diocesan intent that the Armenian Church is significant in the life of every Armenian and his or her family," Archbishop Barsamian said. "We should all be good stewards, using the talents and treasures God has given us for the benefit of the community and the church. Given the economic situation, we must also remember to use those gifts wisely and effectively."
Finding Support to Strengthen Parishes
Because of the 2002 Archbishop's Annual Appeal, the Diocese raised $618,218 from more than 800 people.
The annual giving program was led by a Diocesan Development Committee, appointed by the Diocesan Council and chaired by Alex Dadourian. It included Fr. Mampre Kouzouian, Oscar Tatosian, Barbara Tellalian, and George Kassis.
One important goal was to show Armenians that supporting the Diocese through this appeal would benefit every parish and the Armenian American community at large.
"Our members have to know that the Archbishop's Appeal helps the individual churches," Mr. Dadourian said. "For instance, if we can convince a young man to go into the priesthood, it will help individual churches. All the programs funded by the appeal strengthen the individual parishes."
While nurturing donors, the committee is also educating the Armenian community.
"We had some people who gave many thousands of dollars, and others who gave $100," Mr. Dadourian said. "I'd rather have more people giving $100, than a few giving $1,000, because then we're reaching more people, and more people are becoming interested in the church. We want everyone interested."
Expanding the Circle of Support
Donors in 2002 included the highest levels of lay and clergy leadership (including the members of the Diocesan Council, Board of Trustees, Armenian Church Endowment Fund Board of Trustees, and the Fund for Armenian Relief Board of Directors), parish leaders, major donors, and individuals who gave generously. All played a vital part in making the effort a success.
"We're looking to expand the circle of donors by showing more people why they need to serve as stewards to help strengthen the church for tomorrow," said George Kassis, director of development and communications for the Diocese. "People should assume this responsibility and give annually, especially with the economic climate so depressed."
