Feast of the Ascension of Jesus
This year, Ascension Day is Thursday, May 25. Don’t overlook this important remembrance of our Lord’s going up to heaven to be at the right hand of the Father. Have middle and high school students make a special icon marking the day, a craft they can take home and place in their homes. Follow the instructions below for the upper grades; elementary grade levels can glue sparkles to the haloes and mount their icon on cardboard to take home.

Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a three-day weekend that is marked with barbecues, beach openings, and picnics. But what of its meaning? How can Christians remember the men and women who gave their lives under the always tragic circumstances of war?
Since Sunday Schools rarely schedule classes on this weekend, you might want to have a brief prayer celebration the Sunday before during which students will plant flowers or seeds on the church property. (However, planting is optional.) Try this.
Choose a leader and a reader for the commemoration exercise. The teacher or superintendent can give the background reflection. Assemble everyone outside where the planting is to be done. Hand each person a small seedling or packet of seeds.

Pentecost

Other Summer Feasts
Two of the five major feast days fall in the summer. Try to attend one or both this year as a family. Click here for more on how to bring our faith into your home this summer.
