Pretzels for Lent
Pretzels are a traditional food for Lent, the season before Easter. One reason is that pretzels are shaped like two arms crossed in prayer. (Early Christians often crossed their arms over their chests when they prayed.) Make a class project of baking pretzels by following this simple recipe. They can then be taken home or shared with the school.

St. Gregory and the Time Machine
At an all-school Assembly, feature a "time-machine" moment, when some historical figure from the past comes to address the school. Volunteers from parents or upper grades can take these parts. A little melodrama/corniness is certainly okay. Use a large refrigerator carton as the time machine and decorate accordingly. Here's a script for this season, St. Gregory's Commitment to the Pit, which falls on March 24, 2007.

Fingerprint Butterflies
The butterfly emerging from the cocoon is often used to illustrate a new, transformed life. Children will enjoy making these simple butterflies as you discuss the many examples of new life in the spring (daffodil and crocus plants poking through the soil -- growing from bulb to shoots to flowers; leaves sprouting from branches, etc.)
