V. Rev. Fr. Varoujan Kabaradjian was born in the Pangalte suburb of Constintinople, Turkey, in 1927. In 1947 he left for Jerusalem to study for the priesthood.

 

He was ordained a deacon by His Grace Bishop Khoren Paroyan on January 25, 1950, and on May 27, 1951, he was ordained a celibate priest by Archbishop Khoren Paroyan in the St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Chapel at the Church of Holy Sepulcher.

 

Between 1951 and 1958, Fr. Varoujan held various positions, including assistant dean of the Seminary, pastor of Jerusalem Armenians, dean of the Holy Archangels Monastery, visiting pastor to Amman, Jordan, and chairman of the Pilgrims' Welcoming Committee.  He was also an instructor of Armenian language, catechism, Armenian history, anatomy, practical rituals, and Armenian Church history at the Seminary and the Holy Translators Armenian High School of Jerusalem.

 

On June 24, 1958, Fr. Varoujan came to the United States to serve as the pastor of the St. James Church of Evanston, Illinois.  On October 5, 1963, Archbishop Yeghishe Derderian bestowed upon him the Ten Degrees of Dzayrakuyn Vartabed.

 

Between 1972 and 1976 Fr. Varoujan studied political science, business, and social administration at Chicago's Loop College.

 

In addition to his duties as pastor of the St. James Parish, he served as a visiting pastor at churches in the Chicago and Southern Wisconsin areas, including St. Mesrob Church of Racine, Wisconsin; St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of Chicago, Illinois; Holy Shoghagat Church of Belleville, Illinois; St. John The Baptist Church of West Ellis, Wisconsin; Holy Resurrection Church of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin; St. George Church of Waukegan, Illinois; and Sts. Joachim and Anne Armenian Church of Palos Heights, Illinois.

 

He has served as the president of the Midwest Regional Council between 1960 and 1968, 1977 and 1979, and again from 1981 to the present.  His Eminence Archbishop Torkom Manoogian, then-Primate of the Eastern Diocese, designated Fr. Varoujan as his Midwest regional representative in 1977.

 

On January 1, 1998, the Evanston Police Department assigned him as one of the four police chaplains.  On March 26, 2001, the mayor and police chief of Evanston honored Fr. Varoujan in the Evanston City Hall for services rendered to the city. The city of Evanston first honored him on July 26, 1983.  From 1973 to 1977 he was the only Armenian clergy member in Illinois.
