Rev. Fr. Mesrob Benlian was born in 1935 in Beirut, Lebanon, where he attended St. Gregory the Illuminator Elementary School. In, 1947, he immigrated with his family to Armenia, where he attended one of Yerevan's public schools until 1953. In 1953, during the rein of Catholicos Kevork VI Cheorekjian, Fr. Mesrob was accepted as a student at the Seminary in Echmiadzin.
In 1961, Fr. Mesrob was sent to Moscow by Catholicos Vazken I, to continue his theological studies as well as to learn Russian. In 1964, Fr. Mesrob was ordained a deacon, and sent to Sofia, Bulgaria, to become the pastor of that parish. There he met Siranoush, and they get married, before he was ordained a priest. They are blessed with three boys.
Fr. Mesrob remained in Sofia as the parish priest for 27. In 1992, he moved to America and served as the priest for the Holy Cross Church in New York, NY, until September 2000.
In October 2000, Fr. Benlian was assigned as parish priest to the St. Kevork Church in Houston, Texas, a position he held until 2005, when he was named pastor of the St. Mark Church in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Fr. Mesrob recorded two CDs with the Bulgarian choir Kapelle, "Armenian Christmas Hymns" and "Armenian Easter Hymns."
He passed away on Friday, March 2, 2007, after battling cancer for some time.
