Positive Change Continues at Bustling Diocesan Center

From the Executive Director Dr. Sam Mikaelian

Stewardship is not just the act of giving money; it’s not just handing over a check. It’s the giving of oneself unselfishly toward the strengthening and growth of the Armenian Church. The Armenian Church has survived nearly two millennia because our people have given of themselves in extraordinary ways to propel the church forward with time.

One contemporary example of such energy is the opening this summer of our Ararat Youth and Conference Center after a refurbishment effort led by Karen Durgarian that saw more than 75 volunteers from a number of parishes work together to give the complex a major face-lift. Volunteer members hailed from more than half-a-dozen parishes during several work sessions to give the campgrounds and buildings new life.

“As the people have come up from different parishes, not only were they extremely impressed with the facility, but they also felt a sense of ownership by putting in great efforts to help renovate this center,” Ms. Durgarian said. “Also, the camaraderie and new friendships we all shared with one another was truly a fulfilling experience. It was as if we all attended ‘adult camp.’ You actually wished that so many others were able to experience this special time that we all shared with one another,” she added.

I want to echo Ms. Durgarian’s comments by saying giving one’s time and talent is personally fulfilling. The Diocese cannot buy what a volunteer gives, both locally at the parish level, and regionally for Diocesan efforts. And while the giving is vital to our survival and progress at every level of our organization, it serves as more than just a job well done. While volunteering helps fulfill the needs of parishes and the Diocese in general, stewards who give their time and talent gain a sense of fulfillment. Very often, they form new bonds and strengthen old ones that can only fortify their common future in the Armenian Church.

The Primate has initiated a series of regional meetings to marshal local parish stewardship efforts during this “Year of Stewardship.” The meetings, which Archbishop Barsamian is personally chairing, are focused on strengthening stewardship in the parishes.

During the regional meetings, the Primate stressed the importance of participation in the life of the Armenian Church and urged parishes to utilize the resources outlined in the Stewardship Guidebook, recently published by the Diocese.

Your continued support of the Armenian Church will help us continue our mission to make the Armenian Church a vital part of Christian life for Armenian families. Come join our efforts to increase meaningful participation at all levels in our parishes and in our Diocese. The benefits, although not tangible, are immeasurable and your involvement will make a difference.
